Secondhand Smoke Leads Casino To Pay $4.5 Million To Plaintiff

Saturday, December 4th, 2010

December 3rd, 2010 – by Glen Farmer

The Tropicana Casino And Resort in Atlantic City has recently settled in court to pay an ex-employee $4.5 million dollars restitution. The former casino employee made the claim that his 25 years of working in the casino exposed him to dangerous levels of second hand smoke.

The plaintiff, Vince Rennich, was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2005. A third of his right lung had been removed in September of the same year, though he claims that he has recovered. Rennich also stated that he had never personally smoked.

Rennich has since moved to Dover Downs. This Delaware based casino does not allow smokers to puff in the building.

The lawsuit began in 2006, and was filed prior to the change in ownership of the Tropicana.

In Atlantic City, 25% a casino’s floor is eligible to be a smoking section.

Similar lawsuits have targeted casinos in Las Vegas as well. Employees of many casinos have made efforts to bring smoking bans into the casinos in which they work. While some states have made it a point to ban smoking indoors, others have not.

Unions have also taken steps in some locations to pull smoking out of casinos. Efforts are not always successful, however.

Maine Casino Vote To Be Recounted

Friday, December 3rd, 2010

December 3rd, 2010 – by Glen Farmer

On Election Day of 2010, Maine voters had passed a referendum that would allow a casino to be built in Oxford County. The vote had been so close that opponents to the casino expansion in the state had requested a recount.

The recount began on Thursday. Opponents are hoping that the vote is found to have failed, while proponents are optimistic that the vote will be overturned.

The figures showed that the November 2 vote on the statewide ballot passed by 4,601 votes. The slim margin of 1 percent had prompted opponents to attempt to have the vote overturned.

Uncommon in the state of Maine, a recount has not occurred since 1990.

It is likely that the recount will take multiple weeks in order to verify the actual count of the votes. Election officials will sift through the “yes” and “no” votes in order to determine if there was an error in the counting.

It is unexpected that a difference will be made by the recount. It is expected that 1/5th of the state will be recounted in less than a fortnight.

Should the Yes vote stand, Black Bear Entertainment will establish a $165 million dollar casino with both slot machines and table games.

Online casinos have not been considered by the state.

Mississippi Casino Revenue Rising Despite Recession

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

November 27th, 2010 – by Glen Farmer

In 2008, revenue in Mississippi’s casinos had been on a steady decline. Come 2010, Mississippi’s casino gaming industry is set to rise.

Though Mississippi’s casinos only generated $1.83 billion dollars in the first three quarters of 2010, which represents a 12.9 percent drop from the first nine months of 2008, the decline has apparently slowed. The casino’s revenue has only dropped 3.3 percent from the first three quarters of 2009.

In October, the revenue at Mississippi’s casinos dropped only $2 million, down to $191.5 million for the month of October. This represents the revenue generated only by the state’s commercial casinos. Tribal casinos are not required to publicly release statements surrounding the revenue they had generated.

Casinos all over the nation have proven to be incapable of plowing through the recession unharmed. Atlantic City has become one of the worst contenders in the industry, experiencing free falling revenue that has been plummeting month after month. Nevada has shown sparse revenue gains, but the casinos in the state have also suffered at the hands of the recession.

Few casinos have managed to withstand the recession. Pennsylvania’s up and coming gambling industry has been flourishing. Smaller pockets of casino gaming in the nation have proven to be consistent and stable in terms of revenue.

Casino Investors Continue Push For Gettysburg Casino

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

November 17th, 2010 – by Glen Farmer

The proposal to build a casino near the honored battleground of Gettysburg has reached new heights, as the casino investors are hoping to convince state officials to allow them to build the gaming center near this historic battle ground.

In order to receive a license to operate casinos in the state, a prospective licensee must prove that they are the best choice for the license. In this case, the license would allow the operation of 50 table games and 600 slots.

Heavy opposition keeps coming out to fight against the possibility of a casino at the Gettysburg site. The opposition has made the issue of a Gettysburg casino enormously controversial. The capitalization of the historic venue has offended many who want to build the casino on this site.

The proposed casino operators would build the casino just south of Gettysburg National Military Park, has been heavily opposed by the group No Casino Gettysburg.

Another prospective licensee has been aiming to establish a casino in the Hampden Township. This group is presenting its case to the Gaming Control Board today.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board hopes to award the license for the casino by December 16th. It is unlikely that the Gettysburg Casino will receive licensing.

Man Robbed, Beaten After Leaving Atlantic City Casino

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

November 4th, 2010 – by Glen Farmer

Crime in Atlantic City is no new story, but a recent robbery has left one man injured both in the wallet and of the flesh. Suyun Gu, 25, was assaulted by three men on an elevator shortly after 2 in the morning.

Gu was robbed after leaving the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort. Reports show that Gu was walking into a parking garage after his excursion to the casino. Gu entered an empty elevator, and was followed by one of the suspects. He was quickly assaulted, and eventually joined by two other suspects who had joined in on the beating.

Gu was kicked repeatedly on the floor, and had lost $5,000 and an iPhone in the attack. The victim suffered scratches on his face, cuts on the hands, and other contusions.

Gu was not seriously injured in the attack.

The suspects were described as black males, both wearing baseball hats and zippered up jackets. Police are on the look out for the suspects, and anyone with information surrounding the crime is advised to call local police.

Atlantic City’s hurting revenues are not helped by the criminal activities that some have chosen to partake in. Pennsylvania’s explosive growth has also contributed to the ailing state of affairs in Atlantic City.

American Express Creeping Back Into Online Casinos

Friday, October 29th, 2010

October 29th, 2010 – by Danny Kirk

American Express has recently returned to several of the RTG online casinos. This charge card, while uncommon through most online casinos, has returned to some of the more popular casinos online.

Rushmore Casino and Slots Oasis casino are once again amongst those that accept American Express as one of their casino deposit methods. Their other deposit methods have not changed.

The sister site of Slots Oasis and Rushmore, Cherry Red Casino, has not yet listed American Express as a deposit option. Whether or not they will add it has yet to be established.

“My American Express card has higher limits and lower fees,” began casino gambling Joe H. of Georgia. “Standard credit cards can simply be too expensive, after interest is calculated.”

Due to the nature of the charge card, which is substantially different than the credit card, many online casinos have removed the use of American Express as a deposit option. Coupled with banking restrictions in place in the United States, American Express has become a very rare deposit option.

To date, it is mostly RTG and Rival Casinos that currently accept American Express. Whether or not this will change with the regulation of online casinos in the USA is a question that many players ask.
