The Oxford County Casino vote results came in as a marginal victory. Roughly 6,500 votes separated the win from the loss. Now, opponents are requesting a recount over the vote in order to verify the numbers.
Should the vote prove to be a yes, a casino resort will be established in Oxford, Maine. Black Bear Entertainment LLC will be the company establishing the $165 million dollar casino in the area.
The implications of establishing a casino in the region are many and various. One major addition to the state would be millions of dollars pumped into the economy. Another major advantage is that of the creation of thousands of jobs.
Opponents claim that the money will be taken at the expense of local residents. Gambling addiction and increased crime has also been cited as reasons behind blocking the casino.
While a recount could happen, it is still up in the air whether or not it will not only occur, but also whether it will make a difference.
As one of the closest votes in the history of the state, it is definitely possible that a recount could occur.
Revisions to the bill have also been suggested, due to the unfairness that the Oxford casino would receive – primarily in the addition of table games and a lower tax rate.
